Hillgoer Conservation Residential Frequently Asked Questions

What time do we start on the first day and finish on the last day?  - We hope to have everyone there by 1pm for lunch if needed. If you’re going to be late, don’t worry but remember if you are doing this for DofE there is a requirement to do 5 days! On the last day we expect to finish approximately 3pm

Can I take a friend? Yes, the DofE allows this although ideally you would attend as an individual. If you decide to attend with a friend, they may be in a different working group to you as there will likely be two teams of six. Sharing accommodation with your friend is likely but not guaranteed

Do I have to be doing DofE to attend? No, anyone can attend but we do prioritise the same age range (16-25yo).

What do I need to take? See our summer hill walking kit list here. You will also need overnight clothes, wash bag etc as you would for a small holiday. It is probably a good idea to bring old clothes for the conservation projects. You will need outdoor clothing (a few sets), waterproofs and good footwear. All bedding is provided in the accommodation but you will need to bring your own towels. We will provide working gloves and safety equipment

I have specific food needs, how will these be managed? Just let us know beforehand and we will try our best to help. See the example meals here

Can I take photos? We would be delighted for you to take and share photos of your trip. If any participant objects to this we will let everyone know discreetly at the start of the residential, you will still be able to take photos but perhaps without people in them!

How are the rooms allocated? We expect the rooms to be split on gender, if you have any concerns please get in touch.

Your advert says transport, how does that work? We offer transport from Aberdeen and Braemar (and some pick up points in-between, please contact us to discuss) to and from Mar Lodge. There are public transport options to Braemar via Stagecoach bus from Aberdeen but you will need a lift to Mar Lodge from there.

Have we missed anything? Let us know!
