Our suggested kit for for day walks.
Essentials
Walking boots - Comfortable, waterproof, support the ankle and good grip. Trail shoes are acceptable, but you might get wet feet!
Socks - Woollen or merino walking socks are a good option.
Walking trousers - Quick drying walking trousers (not jeans!).
Waterproof over trousers - Preferably with full length zips so they can easily be taken off and on.
Base layer - T-shirt or shirt next to your skin, should be breathable product like merino. Avoid cotton as this holds moisture.
Mid Layer - Comfortable fleece.
Extra warm layer - Fleece or insulating jacket.
Waterproof jacket - With built in hood.
Gloves - Two pairs in case one gets wet.
Warm hat - A buff can be useful too.
Rucksack - A comfortable 30/40 litre day sack.
Head Torch - With new batteries and spares.
Dry bags / bin bags - A rubble sack or dry bags do a great job of keeping your kit dry. We recommend.
Midge net / spray - Depending on time of year (midge season typically June through to end of September, any slight wind and there will be no midges!)
Sun cream and sunglasses - Depending on forecast!
Sun hat - Depending on forecast!
Food - Enough for your event, you will burn a lot of calories on big hill days so additional snack bars are good too.
Drink - At least a litre. Take a flask for cold days. We recommend a filter water bottle so you can pick up water as you go.
Personal items - Anything you would normally take with you for a day in the hills: toiletries, phone, binoculars, camera etc
Optional
Walking poles - Great to take the strain off your knees
Compass (if you are booked on one of our courses) - We recommend.
Gaiters - Come in to their own in boggy areas.
Foldable sit mat - Because no one wants a wet bum whilst enjoying their lunch!!
Waterproof case for mobile phone - We recommend.
Personal first aid kit - We recommend.
